Activities and Clubs
Mount Alvernia Academy is thrilled to offer a variety of Activities and Clubs for our students. These include:
School Band
The Mt. Alvernia Academy Concert Band is a wonderful experience for students in Grades 3-6. All skill levels are welcomed and encouraged to join the band. The program consists of weekly after school lessons, with a focus towards two concerts held annually. The first is a concert of the experienced musicians at Christmas, and another at the end of the school year where all the students get to share in the thrill of live performance. Instruction is provided by the Paul Effman Music Service. Instrument rentals and purchases (as well as various supplies and equipment) are available from the Service.
Student Council
Student Council is an extracurricular activity by which elected students form a body of leadership poitions to be of service to the Mount Alvernia Academy community. The monthly meetings are directed by a moderator who is appointed by our principal, Mrs. Sullivan. The requirement for the elected members states that the students' effort and conduct relfect the high standards of Mount Alvernia Academy. This is essential as these members are role models for the school. The Coundil members must be able to communicate with their fellow students and work with them while participating in variuos activities sponsored by the Student Council.
The goals of the council are often determined by the members, but are always aimed at service projects for the school and/or community or towards bettering the students' experiences at Mount Alvernia Academy.
The Student Council Officers and Class Representatives are elected at the beginning of each school year. Mrs. Maureen McCafferty and Mrs. Margie Luciano serve as moderators.
School Newspaper - "The Hawk's Nest" The school newspaper, The Hawk’s Nest, was the brainchild of the class of 2008 and we are now in our third year of publication! The newspaper is a sixth grade activity; anyone interested is invited to join as a journalist photographer, artist, formatter, or editor. Many of the sections remain the same from year to year. However, each year, staff members do add new sections of particular interest to them. Our new sections this year are “Healthy Habits” and “Winter Olympics.” The students meet with the faculty advisor two to four times a month during recess in order to discuss current articles and potential stories. Publication is from December to June, with usually four to five issues printed each school year. Please click on the file at the bootom of this page for the latest issue!
Art Club An Art Club for interested fifth and sixth grade students is held weekly in twelve week sessions for children wishing to work on advanced projects. Led by Mrs. Pamela Quinn, Mount Alvernia Academy's Art Teacher, the students create unique and beautiful projects. An additional fee applies for participation.
