Reading Support at Mount Alvernia Academy

Reading is fundamental and the gateway to all learning both for adults and children. In that vein, Mount Alvernia Academy recognizes the importance of laying the best foundation for all of its students. Wanting success for all students, being able to support the struggling reader at the earliest possible time, is a gift which will enable him/her to make positive strides to becoming a life-long learner.

Mount Alvernia Academy has in place a support network for all students starting in Kindergarten where teachers work with the Reading Specialist to assess, evaluate, and place students into appropriate reading groups.   As the year progresses, children’s needs and strengths are addressed.

The role of the Reading Specialist at Mount Alvernia Academy is multi-faceted. In this role, the specialist is to assess students’ needs, to evaluate problem areas, to provide reading support as well as curricula support depending on the students’ ages and needs.

At the earlier years, the concentration is on learning to read and providing early intervention when needed. This can be accomplished through whole class or small group instruction using a variety of modalities.

As the students progress through the grades, the support may take on different roles with the underlying goal of reading fluency and comprehension. Using the students’ textbooks, instruction may vary depending upon the subject matter with the ultimate goal being a successful reader in expository text as well as in recreational reading.
