Kindergarten Curriculum

Kindergarten is a child’s first introduction to formal education.  Mount Alvernia Academy Kindergarten is situated on the first floor of a recently remodeled convent building.  Two classrooms welcome the children into a bright, spacious, sunny environment.  There are also common spaces where all students have an opportunity to interact.

The Catholic faith is central to the lives of our students.  It is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum.  The Kindergarten children attend and participate in liturgies, our Christmas pageant and prayer services.  The Religion curriculum focuses its emphasis on the love of God the Father, the gift of His Son and our responsibility to practice the teaching of Jesus.

Our Language Arts program has a strong phonetic approach.  Children focus on sound-symbol relationships of letters, rhyming, vowels, and formation and identification of upper and lower case alphabet.  Support is given in small groups to those who require reinforcement.  The reading component of our Language Arts program has its core in the Reading Street series.  Each week a big book or trade book is read, discussed and analyzed.  Specific skills such as plot, sequence, main idea, setting, cause and effect and characters are taught.  Children are introduced to high-frequency words and have the opportunity to read from individual leveled readers in small groups.  Workbooks support phonetic and reading skills.  Journal writing is introduced as well as the grammatical components of a sentence.

The children are introduced to Math through various concepts such as, sorting, geometry and patterns, measurement and graphing, addition and subtraction readiness,  understanding and writing numerals 0-31 and counting up to 100.  These concepts are all supported with hands on activities and use of manipulatives which give each child a rich understanding of each math skill.

The Kindergarten children are introduced to Science, Spanish, Computer, Art, Library and Physical Education by Mount Alvernia Academy’s outstanding special subject teachers. Social Studies is taught weekly through the Time For Kids magazine series concentrating on current events.

The Kindergarten program is supported by a wealth of learning activities and creative play materials.  Choice time is a daily highlight for our children.  At this time, children explore various creative interests in a relaxed atmosphere.

Our team of Kindergarten teachers strives to provide a nurturing, fun and loving atmosphere at Mount Alvernia Academy.
