Technology
“If learning is an act of exploration then technology equips the explorer for a journey of a lifetime.”
In the computer lab and throughout our campus-wide and worldwide network, all the members of the Mount Alvernia Academy family enjoy exploring technology. The students in kindergarten through sixth grade visit the computer lab for class once a week. Our lab classes are complemented by computer usage in the library and in their classrooms.
The overall goal for students in Kindergarten through second grade is to expose the students to fundamental computer concepts and to have them become familiar with the hardware, and software applications available in our software library.
The objective for students in grade three and grade four is to advance the children’s computing knowledge to include file management, keyboarding and research skills. Students are introduced to the Microsoft operating systems, and Microsoft Office 2003/2007 applications, emphasizing Microsoft Word, which is used as the primary word processing application. The students use the Type to Learn software for basic keyboarding techniques. They utilize electronic research software and the Internet as a research tool. In addition, a variety of core curriculum computer assisted learning software titles are available for curriculum integration.
The goal for grade five and grade six is to offer the students more knowledge of the Windows operating systems, the software and Microsoft Office 2003/2007, Internet search techniques, writing formats, keyboarding skills and introduction to presentation software techniques. All of our students are encouraged to integrate the computer technology into their primary curriculum requirements.
In summary, the core values of Mount Alvernia's technology curriculum is that every child can achieve success in computer usage, computer use can be viewed as both a challenge and an opportunity, and the child gains an understanding of the relationship of technology to everyday life and their future.
