In
addition to a rigorous core curriculum covering English grammar and
reading comprehension, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Religion, Mount
Alvernia Academy offers Art, Athletics/Physical Education, Computer,
Library, Music, and Science specialty curricula as a part of each student's
weekly schedule.
Following the example
of St. Francis, the faculty encourages the students to follow Christ
in simplicity as St. Francis did and to grow spiritually as well as
academically. The school enjoys a well-deserved reputation for academic
excellence.. The student body consistently scores higher than the national
norm on the National Achievement Tests. In the past, graduates have
gone on to the following middle schools: Belmont Hill, Beaver Country
Day, Catholic Memorial, Boston Latin School, Boston Latin Academy, The
Roxbury Latin School, Mount Alvernia High School, Newton Country Day
School, St. Sebastian's School and Ursuline Academy.
Highly personalized
attention is afforded to each student by an ideal class size and a very
dedicated staff. Remedial help is available to students in need. There
is a reading specialist and tutorial services on site. The curriculum
is strong on the core subjects as well as computer literacy, art, library,
music, and science.
A Christian attitude
permeates the entire curriculum. Collecting food for the homeless, raising
money for needy organizations, and a day-to-day involvement in the Big
Brother/Big Sister program are only a few of the ways that all grades
are involved with Christian service and outreach to the community. The
entire student body prepares and participates in monthly liturgies,
which help develop and reinforce moral values, Christian teachings,
and healthy self-esteem.
Students at Mount
Alvernia Academy have many opportunities to express themselves creatively.
An active student government, science fair, art show, school-wide Christmas
concert, and after school sports are some of the highlights of a very
busy school calendar.
